We all should love eN-Zed a wee bit more

I mean the actual dirt and water and not because of climate change, just because it will return that love back to us. Call it the enlightened self-interest. eN-Zed gives us clean air to breathe and not all countries do that… China, India… Our squeaky clean soil and pristine rainwater gives us kumara and milk and roast lamb and the potatoes for the chips part of fish & chips. Clean rivers give us whitebait patties and clean lakes give us roast duck. And the clean sea gives us paua patties and crayfish and the fish part of fish & chips. If we mess up these natural spaces it would be like using the veggie gardens in our back yards as toilets. Ik!

It’s not just about our food though. The bellbird/korimako singing in the mornings, rain-filled clouds, star-filled night sky, that cool shade with its accompanying sweet aroma in a beech forest…, swimming in Torrent Bay along the Abel Tasman Walkway, looking out over the Canterbury Plains from somewhere up on Mt Hutt (with a hot pie in your polar-fleece pocket), the bouldered flood protection banks at the mouth of the Hokitika River…, looking out to the huge waves from Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula or swimming at Hot Water Beach up the Coromandel…, or swimming in the Aparima River in Western Southland…, or sitting on the beach at Gore Bay near Cheviot with the sun sparkling on the surface of the sea and a feats of those fish & chips I mentioned earlier, the sound of seagulls scrapping over the wee bits of chips and batter and the waves crashing, rushing inwards and then retreating…, this is all a bazillion times better for us without plastic shopping bags, foil chip wrappers, drink cans and cigarette butts. (And don’t get me started on fashion sneakers.)

Please use the rubbish bins, but better still, please don’t buy ik stuff wrapped in plastic or foil.

What’s your one little behaviour that you do to be kind to the eN-Zed environment?
