What’s bigger than the Willy Webb-Ellis Cup?

It’s funny how eN-Zed has so many experts on rugby that the NZRFU didn’t even consider for one of the coaching roles. No wonder we lost 2 games. Aaron from Accounts in Auckland and Pat from the pie shop in Picton and Tom from Tinwald… they seem to know everything from why the front row is not fronting up to why Smith is only half of a halfback and why Razor should be breakdancing his way down the Champs-Elysees. If only their knowledge were being exploited.

Relax. The real experts are doing their best.

It’s funny how Lionel knows all about lineouts, but isn’t a coach. And how Rick knows all about rucks, but he’s not a coach either. And how Paul knows all about the maul, but you guessed it, he’s not a coach either. Lionel, Rick and Paul aren’t their real names of course, because online, the loudest, most knowledgeable and rudest are also the most anonymous. But I do happen to know that Lionel and Rick and Paul all hate it when others tell them how to mop the floor, dose the lambs, and drive the taxi, respectively, even though they’ve been doing their jobs for a bazillion years.

We’ll not tell you how to mop a floor and you’ll not tell Ethan de Groot how to pack down against another team’s front row. It’s all about experience and expertise, right? And respect.

It’s funny, but not laughy-funny, how when the main stream media publish opinion pieces that are nothing less than a full-frontal personal attack on the likes of Ian Foster or Sam Cane, they either don’t allow comments or they block comments that question the ‘journalist’s’ credentials to make such personal attacks. I don’t recall any of the mainstream media’s ‘sports journalists’ ever playing national, never mind international, level footy although I do recall a code of ethics for journalists and I do know the definition of cyber-bullying. I wonder if those journos know what cyber-bullying is.

Wouldn’t it nice, I mean like in a warm eggy custard on an apple crumble in the winter nice, if we won the Willy Webb-Ellis Cup? We all know how that feels, of course. Apple crumble with warm custard and the Will Webb-Ellis aren’t new for any eN-Zedder. We’ve felt the love before. In fact, do we really need to go there again? Maybe there are bigger wins to be won. I’ve been wondering how much nicer it would be if eN-Zed became a kinder, quieter, more compassionate place, starting with less nasty onliners, you know, cyber-thugs. I recall a great tsunami of nasty onliners during Covid when many eN-Zedders were blocked from returning to their own country. And another wave of anonymous cyber-hate when the teachers were wanting more pay. How big of a win would it be to have no nasty online cyber-bullying by anonymous pseudo-experts on all things from inflation to footy.

What would be even better than winning the RWC? Eradicating bullying.

It’s all about respect, right? Maybe we’ve not been paying attention just before all of those ABs’ games…
